The Pythagoreans believed that the universe was governed by mathematical laws. They also believed in the transmigration of souls, the idea that the soul is reborn after death into a new body. Pythagoras himself was said to have remembered his past lives. The Pythagoreans were also known for their vegetarianism and their strict moral code. Pythagoras' teachings had a profound influence on Western thought. His theorem on right triangles is still used today in geometry. His ideas about music and astronomy also influenced the development of these fields. And his beliefs about the transmigration of souls and the importance of mathematics have been adopted by many different religious and philosophical traditions.

Pythagoras' Life

Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos around 570 BC. His father was Mnesarchus, a wealthy merchant, and his mother was Pythais, a priestess of Hera. Pythagoras received a privileged education, studying with the leading thinkers of his time. He traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean region, visiting Egypt, Babylon, and India. In around 530 BC, he founded the Pythagorean school in Croton, Italy.

The Pythagorean school was a community of scholars who shared Pythagoras' beliefs about the importance of mathematics and philosophy. The school was divided into two groups: the akousmatikoi, or listeners, and the mathematikoi, or mathematicians. The akousmatikoi were responsible for studying Pythagoras' teachings and for passing them on to new members of the school. The mathematikoi were responsible for developing Pythagoras' mathematical and scientific theories.

Pythagoras was a charismatic leader who inspired great devotion among his followers. He was said to have had a beautiful voice and to have been able to perform miracles. He also claimed to have remembered his past lives. Pythagoras' teachings had a profound influence on Western thought. His theorem on right triangles is still used today in geometry.
