Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market
Uncover the Lost Story of the Civil War's Valley Campaign
In the spring of 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early launched a daring raid into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. His goal was to threaten Washington, D.C., and draw Union forces away from General Robert E. Lee's army in Petersburg. Early's raid was initially successful, and he even managed to defeat a Union army under General Franz Sigel at the Battle of New Market. However, Union General Philip Sheridan was soon dispatched to the valley to stop Early. Sheridan pursued Early relentlessly, and the two armies clashed in a series of bloody battles.
